If i will try to system icons, i can diverse it in 2 types:
- Icons — buttons (you will want to press it)
- And icons — tips (they explain legend or just mean action or object)
Of course it is a smooth edge between them and these 2 types often combines in one icon.
Icons — buttons
As usual they have salient form. In our time, in big and medium sizes, more widespreads style aqua, because it is the most accessible way to make any icon more "richly".Except of this it reminds us usual form and volume of industrial icons.
Icons — buttons as usual are more "roundy" and more blazing, because they should be good perceptible and comfortable to press. If you see small and thin icon, perhaps you'll think that its hard to press it.
When you should to attract user's attention and you want him to press the button ("click me") you should make it as max brightening, sweety and big. For example buttons "buy", "download", "join" , etc. But of course, you should do it with tact.
Icons — tips
As usual they supply an inscription and help to understand text
(or buttons) intuitinitely. Color and brighteness of these icons should
be compared with text and exiles near of it. For example if icons the same color
and size as text, it could be understandable as first letters of article and of
course it's not comfortable for user.
Remember, if you'll have too many bright icons (toolbar as example) they will take away your attention. So if you want them to be in harmony (between them and content), they sholdn't be too "loudly".
There are some reasons to make icons neutral:
- As soon user will know them and its location by heart
- In process of work he will see new elements that have importance, and they could be lost in general background
- Very bright icons will tire user.
