Understanding Icon Formats

SVG vs PNG vs ICO

Choosing the right icon format depends on your use case. SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) is ideal for web applications because it scales perfectly at any resolution and can be styled with CSS. The file sizes are typically smaller than raster alternatives, and they render crisply on high-DPI displays.

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) offers excellent transparency support and is widely compatible across all platforms. Use PNG when you need raster icons at specific sizes or when working with older systems that may not fully support SVG.

ICO format is specifically designed for Windows favicons and application icons. ICO files can contain multiple sizes within a single file, allowing Windows to select the appropriate size for different contexts like taskbar, desktop, or file explorer views.

Icon Sprites vs Individual Files

Icon sprites combine multiple icons into a single image file, reducing HTTP requests. This technique was more critical before HTTP/2 became widespread. Modern approaches often favor individual SVG files or SVG sprite sheets where icons are referenced by ID.

Icon Fonts vs SVG Icons

Icon fonts were popular for their ease of use and ability to style icons like text. However, SVG icons have largely replaced icon fonts due to better accessibility, multi-color support, and more precise rendering. SVG icons can also be animated and manipulated with JavaScript.
